What is a Fabric Collage?

The term "collage" comes from the French word for "to glue" and basically means creating a new work of art by assembling different forms.  Traditionally, collages utilized paper items, such as newspaper, photographs, etc.  Both Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque utilized this term in the early 20th century for their works that employed this technique.  I enjoy utilizing collage techniques to make pieces from paper forms.  Utilizing fabric, instead of paper, takes the work to a new level for me.  I have always been drawn to the tactile nature of fabric and was taught to quilt by my Appalachian Kentucky aunts.  I bring their traditional quilting concepts to the creation of more contemporary art .

A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to have my technique featured in Quilting Arts magazine and a photo of one of my pieces on the cover.  It was a real thrill!
